How much do you know about Spring festival

春节是指汉字文化圈传统上的农历新年，俗称“年节”，传统名称为新年、大年、新岁，但口头上又称度岁、庆新岁、过年。

The Spring Festival is a traditional culture Chinese festival on lunar calendar. It is also called “Nian”Festival(aka new year festival) , comonly known as "new year", “big year”,”new age”as its traditional name.

在现代，人们把春节定于农历正月初一。

Nowadays, people named January 1st(lunar calendar) as the Spring Festival day.

春节是除旧布新的日子，春节虽定在农历正月初一，但春节的活动却并不止于正月初一这一天。

Spring festival is a refreshing day. But the celebration continue for a week.

除夕/CHU XI

每年农历腊月的最后一天的晚上，农历年的最后一天（月大为30日，月小29日），称之为“除夕”。

CHU XI is the every last day of a lunar calendar in a year( which is new year’s even usually 30th or 29th accordingly)

传统习俗：置天地桌、吃年夜饭、接神、踩祟、接财神

Traditional Custom: gathering table dinner, New Year's Eve dinner, fortune god welcoming etc.

正月初一/1st day of Rooster Year

正月初一是“鸡日”，原名“元旦”，“元”的本意为“头”，后引申为“开始”。

1st day of rooster is also called the rooster head which was called Yuandan. Yuan means head, and it refers to the begining.

传统习俗：开门炮仗、拜年、占岁、饮屠苏酒、聚财

Traditional habbit:Open the door, firecrackers, future telling, Tusu Wine drinking, Hongbao Sending

正月初二/2nd day of Rooster Year

正月初二是“狗日”，这一天，嫁出去的女儿们便纷纷带着丈夫、儿女回娘家拜年。

2nd day of a new year is also called the dog day which is the day for newly married girl to go back her parents’ home and visit with her husband.

传统习俗：祭财神（北方）

Traditional habit: Offering mammon(in North China)

正月初三/3rd day of Rooster Year

正月初三是女娲造猪的日子，故称“猪日”，在这一天里，人们习惯不杀猪，如果当日天气好，则当年的猪会长得膘肥体壮，主人家自然喜上眉梢。

3rd day of a new year is the day when Nvwa Goddess created pigs which is also called the pig day. People don’t kill any pig on the day. If it comes up a shiny day and the pigs are fat and healthy, masters will feel very happy about it as a good sign.

传统习俗：烧门神纸

Traditional habit: Door keeper paper burning.

正月初四/ 4th day of Rooster Year

正月初四是女娲造羊的日子，故称“羊日”。在这一天里，人们不能杀羊，如果天气好，则意味着这一年里，羊会养得很好，养羊的人家会有个好收成。

4th day of a new year is the day when Nvwa Goddess created sheep which is also called the sheep day. People don’t kill any sheep on the day. If it comes up a shiny day and the sheep are fat and healthy, masters will feel very happy about it as a good sign.

• 传统习俗：迎神接神，接五路，吃折罗，扔穷

• Traditional habit: Fortune God welcoming, praying for richness

正月初五/ 5th day of Rooster Year

正月初五是“牛日”，俗称破五。民间有吃饺子的习俗，寓意着招财进宝。

5th day of a new year is called bull day, which is called Break Five. Dumplings will be made that day as to pray for a fortunate year.

传统习俗：祭财神（南方）、送穷、开市

Traditional habit: Fortune God welcoming(in South China), business opening.

正月初六/ 6th day of Rooster Year

正月初六是“马日”，在这一天要送穷。

• 6th day of a new year is the hose day. Praying for richness usually on that day.

• 传统习俗：送穷，启市

Traditional habit: Business opening, start for richness

正月初七/ 7th day of Rooster Year

正月初七是人日，亦称“人胜节”、“人庆节”、“人口日”、“人七日”等。

7th day is the human being’s day which is also the population’s day etc.

传统习俗：熏天、吃七宝羹、送火神

Traditional habit:Qibao Soup eating, Fire God sending

正月初八/ 8th day of Rooster Year

传说初八是谷子的生日。这天天气晴朗，则这一年稻谷丰收，天阴则年歉。

8th day of a new year is the birthday of millet. A sunny day means a prosperity year.

传统习俗：顺星、放生祈福

Traditional habit: Star Praying, Free captive animals
